Mosquitoes are a common nuisance in Costa Rica, particularly in coastal areas like Playa Nosara. The warm and humid climate provides the perfect breeding ground for these pesky insects. Mosquitoes are most active during the rainy season, which typically runs from May to November. They can be found in abundance near bodies of water, such as rivers, ponds, and marshes.

One of the most common mosquito-borne illnesses in the region is dengue fever. Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, and rash. In severe cases, dengue fever can be fatal.

Another mosquito-borne disease that poses a risk in Costa Rica, Playa Nosara, is Zika virus. Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. Symptoms of Zika virus infection include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. In pregnant women, Zika virus can cause birth defects such as microcephaly in babies.
